TEQIP Workshop on July 1-2, 2016

INTRODUCTION

Teachers can impact students well beyond the classroom and into their future lives. Students do not view their teachers only through the lens of the syllabus and, in fact, expect to interact and connect with their teachers in meaningful ways. In this manner, over the duration of their college life, teachers can be viewed as compassionate, loving, and nurturing mentors for students. Therefore, it is important for teachers to be able to understand and appreciate the many facets of a student’s life – their personal, college, social, family, and spiritual life – and reflect on how these are closely linked to their academic performance. It is especially vital to be able to identify and provide appropriate support for students experiencing stress, anxiety, or depression.

What does well-being mean to you?

In our currently hectic lives, how are we going to incorporate time to even think about our well-being? Understanding well-being is critical through the theoretical frameworks suggested by psychologists such as Maslow and holistic aspects of well-being that include mental, physical and spiritual domains.

This Faculty Development Program “Going beyond the syllabus: Nurturing students” aims to sensitize teachers towards their students’ physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being and to share with them skills to effectively impact their students’ lives.
