Research Interests

I am interested in phase transformations and microstructural evolution during processing of metallic alloys. In particular, welding and solidification processing has been one of my core research focus. Collaborating with colleagues, we have also started to look at phase transformations in other kinds of processing operations and systems such as thin films. Using structural characterization tools (mostly electron microscopy and associated tools, X-ray diffraction, DSC/DTA,etc.), we try to gain insight into liquid to solid and solid state phase transformations, and in turn, and relate them to the microstructure and properties. We also develop computational models which can help us understand the macroscopic transport at one end and microstructure formation on the other. The grand challenge, of course, remains to link these together in a satisfactory fashion.
