Research Work: Improving Wireless Communication Efficiency for Self-Sustaining IoT Networks

Abstract:

In the coming decade, IoT devices will increase in numbers as well as their reach into many areas surrounding the users. A vast number of IoT devices will be deployed in areas like structural health monitoring and remote sensing. In these fields, user intervention is very much restricted due to limited access to IoT devices. As the transmission of data is a power hungry process, the battery operated IoT devices in these scenarios will not last for longer time. Thus, minimum power consumption, and in turn, maximum operating life is a very important aspect of IoT device implementation. One additional way to prolong operating life of IoT devices is to harvest energy from different available sources. These sources can be natural, e.g. solar, thermal, etc. or artificial, e.g. electromagnetic radiation, radio frequency spectrum, etc. Electromagnetic radiation emitted from conductors carrying electric power supply can be wirelessly tapped to power the device. Recently, many researchers have started working on Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT). Thus, implementation of various harvesting techniques along with reduction in power consumption in an IoT device needs to be done, in order to make a self-sustainable IoT device.
