Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH), one of the eight new IITs established in 2008 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, is currently located in Hyderabad city and is a part of history in the making. It started functioning from its temporary campus in August 2008 by admitting 111 B.Tech. students. On 27 February 2009, the foundation stone of IITH was laid by Smt Sonia Gandhi, Hon'ble Chairperson of UPA. It started with just three departments - Electrical Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering and Mechanical Engineering and has now grown to include, not only various other engineering departments (Chemical, Civil, Materials Science & Biotechnology) but also sciences (Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics) and Liberal Arts with the required state-of-the-art labs already established. It currently has more than 1000 students and around 90 faculty members. Its youthful and dynamic faculty, passionate students and dedicated staff together envision building a premier institute with the main focus on ideas and innovations that contribute to the progress of science and technology. To achieve this vision, an atmosphere which churns out professionally skilled, morally strong and socially responsible youth is created at IITH. Working towards achieving this goal, IITH has made significant progress in academia and research. The faculty is zealously involved in several sponsored projects from DST, DIT and other governmental agencies.
The total outlay of these projects crosses 500 million, a creditable achievement for any fledgling institute. Tie-ups with foreign universities and industrial giants provide students with international and national scholarships. They secure prestigious industrial & research internships that broaden their perspectives in technology as well as endow them with adaptability, versatility, team spirit and a disciplined work ethic.
