Project Overview
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is establishing new Ph.D Scholarship at Japanese Universities for graduates or expected graduates of IITH based on agreement between Government of Japan and Government of India. The overall goal of this Scholarship Project is to enhance World-Class Research Network between Higher Education Institutions/ Industrial clusters of Japan and IITH, whereby both can establish educational and research excellence in the field of science, technology and engineering in the future. To achieve this goal, the Project aims to promote exchange of human resource between IITH and Japan at various levels by offering Ph. D Scholarship for IITH graduates to study for Ph.D and Master degree in Japanese Universities.
Duration of the Project
This scholarship is available for FY2012, FY2013 and FY2014. Participants of the 3rd (last) batch are supposed to complete their study in Japan and to leave from Japan by the end of December 2019.
Prospective Fields and Level of Study
This funding is available to Ph.D track students in the field of Science, Technology and Engineering. The main language of all of the available courses is English and the list of the courses in Japanese Universities in FY 2012 is as follows.
Keio University (Course List)
Osaka University (Course List: Vol.1 Vol.2)
Ritsumeikan University (Course List)
The University of Tokyo (Course List)
Waseda University (Course List)

Not over 30 nos./year (FY2012, FY2013 and FY2014 only)

Qualifications
1) Nationality : Citizens of India;
2) Age : between 20 and 30 years old as of April 1 in the year of the participants? arrival in Japan in principle (Note: If University and/or course has its own limitation for age, which takes priority over this qualification);
3) Military personnel are NOT allowed to apply;
4) Applicants must have a clear understanding of the overall goal of the Project;
5) Applicants must NOT be those who will receive another scholarship through other foreign assistance at the same time;
6) Health condition: mentally and physically in sound;
7) English proficiency: to have a good command of English to a level sufficient for study in Japan; and
8) Graduates or expected graduates of IITH

Financial Assistance Provided
This scholarship will cover Tuition Fees, Living Allowance, Airfare, Insurance and other allowance. For details please visit here.

Application Procedure –What to do as an applicant-

STEP 1 (by 16th Jan 2012) (The deadline is extent from 16th Dec 2011 to 16th Jan 2012.)
Applicants duly fill Application Form of FRIENDSHIP (Ph.D Scholarship) (*1) and send it at the following address by 16th Jan 2012:
1. Data File in MS Word or PDF by e-mail to friendship@jicaindiaoffice.org ;
2. Printed Copy by post to the following address;

Afterwards, the Operation Committee of FRIENDSHIP (Ph.D Scholarship) selects some candidates for STEP 2 or STEP 3 from all applicants to make a short list. The result is notified one by one between Jan and April.
STEP 2 (Feb - April 2012) Only for those who are requested
If necessary, applicants are required to take an interview with prospective university. The detail will be notified via e-mail according to the necessity. The expense, i.e. travel cost, accommodation etc. are borne by JICA.
STEP 3-1 (April - May 2012) Only for successful applicants on STEP 1 & 2
Successful applicants are asked to submit Application Form of University(*2) to JICA. The details are guided by e-mail. According to the request from university, examination and/or interview may be required to take in Japan. The expense, i.e. travel cost, accommodation etc. are borne by JICA.
STEP 3-2 (April - May 2012) Only for successful applicants on STEP 1 &2
In parallel with STEP 3-1, Application Form of JICA(*3) is asked to submit for administration after the notification of JICA.
The result whether you are successful in scholarship and admission in university is notified together by JICA after STEP 2 and 3.
